Training the Students

Training the students can be difficult at first, but they catch on quickly. Let students know your expectations and reasons for doing Gallery Learning. Let them know the benefits of Gallery Learning such as helping them to organize their thinking as well as displaying their work in written form. Gallery Learning also provides structure to foster student discussion. Of course, students love to talk with others.

Suggestions on first training the students:

  1. How to hold and use the markers correctly.

  2. How to use the whiteboards correctly, (assign boards, partner collaboration techniques).

  3. How to properly care for and clean the boards. Try not to leave marks on boards for days at a time as this will cause staining.

  4. How to do consensus building, (proper protocol). Consensus building takes time for students to learn.

  5. How to show multiple representations. This is key for students to grasp. This may take some time, so be patient and be creative. Multiple representations lead to higher level thinking and learning. Most students do not know how to do this. GL can expedite the learning because of its open nature. For more information on this topic please refer to the section on "White Board Planning/Writing".
